True Ministry

I was mildly surprised to find a fresh way of describing the nature of true ministry from a book on preaching published in 1877 (found via Preaching On Your Feet, by Fred Lybrand).  But it doesn’t describe preaching; see if it impacts you as much as it did me.

(T)he Christian ministry is not the mere practice of a set of rules and precedents, but is a broad, free, fresh meeting of a man with men, in such close contact that the Christ who has entered into his life may, through his, enter into theirs.

They were a little sexist in the 1800’s – I think this applies to men and women equally!  But I also think it applies to the entire body, not just preachers!!  When we effectively minister, we are bringing Christ with us as we enter into the lives of others and allowing him to enter the lives of others.  Hope that applies to whatever ministry you are involved in!!

A good note John; Just like the old days when I used to listen to Pastors that preached from the Bible and the Heart.

    Thanks
