Total Church

Desiring God Blog highlights a book I plan on reading: Total Church by Tim Chester. On first glance, I like

how he portrays church as identity and not an event:

“Total church” is our way of capturing the idea that church is not one activity in our lives. Church isn’t a meeting you attend or a building your enter. It’s our identity, our community, our family. It’s the context for the totality of the Christian life.

I also appreciate his line: “ordinary people living ordinary life with gospel intentionality.”:

One of our catchphrases is “ordinary people living ordinary life with gospel intentionality.” It means doing the chores, having meals, watching sports, and so on with an intention to talk about Jesus, to pastor one another with the gospel, and to share that gospel with unbelievers.

Reformed and Missional – a nice combo.

Tim is going to be at our meeting in October. We keep picking his brain on the house church and similar ideas. He’s a pretty solid guy and I hope he gives me a free copy of his book. =)

Are you bringing him in special for the pastors?

He’s coming to our Church Planting Institute to talk about the house church model. There will be about 150 of our staff and partners there. Should be good. We had him about 3 years ago to talk about the Crowded House, which was the first exposure for most of our staff to house church.
