Eternity: “. . . which goes on forever; and which every chapter is better than the one before.”

Pastor Brian read this C.S. Lewis quote as we finished up the Exodus series and it has stuck in my mind and stirred my heart to think about eternity.

Now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story, which no one on earth has read; which goes on forever; and which every chapter is better than the one before.

C.S. Lewis, The Last Battle, 184

One of Exodus’ themes is the presence of God as they leave Egypt. It’s rooted in God’s unconditional covenant and seen in the fire, the cloud, and the Tabernacle. Of course this culminates in the Promise Land and the Temple for Israel. It continues on through Scripture with Jesus’ incarnation as the only one who can permanently reconcile us to God, the Holy Spirit given, and finds its greatest fulfillment in eternity when God will be with His people. Revelation 21:3&4 says it this way: “And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes.”

I’m only 42 years old, but eternity seems so close, and I long for it more and more as the years go by.

How is it for you – young and old – do you think about eternity? In what ways?
