Kym - I think its a combination of the words and the tune that make it so encouraging. Horatio Spafford sure did have a hard life - helps keep things in perspective.

Conservative Republicans are proposing a 10-point checklist gauging proper adherence to core principles of the party. This approach reminds me of Moody's Fundamentals of Christianity, which began the fundamentalist movement. For more, I recommend http://euandus3.wordpress.com/2009/11/24/the-fundamentals-of-the-gop/

This is so great! One day last week, I was sitting at my computer working diligently, I heard a text message on my phone...I looked and it was Zac saying "Hi, I love you!" Wow!, I waited, I was thinking ok, in a couple minutes he's going to ask me to go somewhere or something. I was so WRONG! He never did - That made my heart melt!

I agree that grace can get lost - and quickly! Depression was touched on in my seminary training, as well as ways that one can get help if needed. I was grateful for that bit of training! I didn't realize how large a problem it was among pastors.

God never turns from us in the same way that we turn from Him. The "turning" and "returning" that we do (again, they are both the same word) has both an ethical and relational component. So it is not just about how we feel about God, but what we do about it as well; we have to live in a way that is compatible with His demands.

He never turns from us in that same way because His character never changes, thus His actions do not change. That's why your grandma's quote is so good.

But God certainly gets angry and wants us to come back to Him. So we cannot live however we want and expect God to just "be there" whenever we want Him to be. Unfortunately, many people I know think just that. They live in a way that is incompatible with God's call on their lives, then try to get God to do what they want - and they don't understand when He does not answer.

John, I'm curious about God "turning" more towards us after we turn towards him. Can you take application from the opposite. When we turn from God he turns from us? That might be a tough pill to swallow for many of the "God is Love" crowd. My grandma used to say no matter how many steps you take away from God, it's only one step back to Him.

Good article. As a pastor, and one who has battled depression due to "unrealistic expectations" grace can get lost. Steve Brown deal with this in his book Scandalous Freedom. Enjoyed reading your post.
I'm new to this blog thing..love Cymbala too.
