The Intent of A Common Word is Good

Unlike Andrew, my jaw did not drop after reading the documents he has linked to. Having read A Common Word, the evangelical response, and John Piper’s comments, I’ve come to the conclusion that Piper is correct theologically but misses the point of A Common Word.

Congo War Rape Victims

I was driving home from my son’s saxophone lesson this evening and listening to Public Radio International’s The World and was deeply impacted by a report on women who have been raped in Congo. I highly recommend you listen to the report (Click on Listen to Report) rather than read it - the voices give a greater reality to the women who are suffering - more than just reading the report. Trusting God

God has put me in situations in the past that seem to have prepared me for the now.  But when I went through those difficult things back then, I couldn’t see why; only with the benefit of many years of hindsight can I see that He was preparing me for today.  I say all that because we often wonder why God puts us in some circumstances.  The reason may become clear later, or maybe not at all.  But He has His reasons.  Perhaps that is why we can “Be thankful in all things.”  Thankful knowing that whatever He does, it works for His glory and our character.

God at Work

I read a story in the news today about a teacher who had an ongoing pattern of sexual abuse of young girls.  It was a terrible story, with no good end.  Yes, he was eventually caught.  But it was only after years of abuse and countless damaged girls.  I wondered as I read it, “How could such a thing happen?”

Battling Unbelief: Anxiety

I traveled to Jamaica this past July, a trip which involved flying in a plane. Anyone who knows me well knows that I hate flying for a number of reasons. Needless to say, I experience a lot of anxiety leading up to the flight and, especially, on the flight itself. After the emotions of the flight wear off, I usually laugh at this anxiety, but John Piper’s Battling Unbelief has exposed it for what it really is: the sin of unbelief.
