God’s Poem
April 23, 2008 — awfordGod’s creation is a poem so that we may know Him.
Towering Redwoods, Blossoming Cherry Trees, a Yellow Labrador, the molecular structure of an atom, Niagara Falls , The Italian Alps, Lake Michigan, and the Milky Way - all of these are part of the poem of creation written by God.
I use the word poem because of Romans 1:18-20.
Romans 1:18-20 18The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
The phrase “what has been made” near the end of verse 20 holds the key word poiema which is where we get the word poem. Genesis teaches us that God spoke into existence all of creation - a poem that clearly communicates who God is: his invisible qualities of eternal power and divinity.
I think that this profound truth should warm our hearts, give us great concern, and send us to our knees all at once. Our hearts should be warmed by the truth that God has revealed Himself to us, and if you are follower of Jesus, it should move you to thankfulness that He has revealed His Son to you. It should give us great concern because their are none who are with out excuse. There are none who can say, “I did not know there was a God”. No one can say, “I am exempt from wrath for my wickedness.” This should move us to living out and proclaiming the Gospel through life and lips. And we should fall to our knees in humble worship. The God of the universe who spoke his visual poem to us through creation and through His Son (the Word made flesh) has made available to us a solution to His wrath.
