Piper’s “The Future of Justification”: A Review

I’ve provided a chapter by chapter summary of John Piper’s The Future of Justification, but I have not yet provided any editorial comments on the book. Here are my thoughts on Piper’s newest release.

What do Piper and Wright Have in Common?

Reading the promotional material about John Piper’s The Future of Justification leads one to believe that there are many irreconcilable differences between he and N. T. Wright. Upon further reading, however, I want to propose that there are many similarities between the two:

John Piper’s “The Future of Justification”

Having spent some time with N. T. Wright’s “New Perspective on Paul” (NPP), we’re now ready to engage John Piper’s critique in The Future of Justification. Here is a brief chapter by chapter summary:

N.T. Wright’s “What St. Paul Really Said”

In preparation for reading John Piper’s The Future of Justification, I spent Thanksgiving reading N.T. Wright’s What Saint Paul Really Said. In ten short chapters, Wright lays out his understanding of first-century Judaism and Pauline theology. The exegesis is brief (to keep the book at 183 pages) but sufficient to make the point. Here is a chapter by chapter summary of this challenging book.

A Good Friend Stopped By on Thanksgiving

I was amazed that my good friend Brett came by after the big game on Thanksgiving Day. We celebrated another big win and the Packers best start since 1962. I think he was on his way home from Detroit to Green Bay via the Lake Express. We hope that no matter who your favorite team is that you had a special day with your family and friends.

A History of the New Perspective on Paul

Wright and Piper In Their Own Words

Here are two important links. Many thanks to those who sent them:

  1. John Piper’s book, The Future of Justification, is available online.
  2. An interview with N. T. Wright at Asbury Seminary on this subject and more.

N.T. Wright on the New Perspective on Paul

One theological debate that I’m still trying to wrap my mind around is the New Perspective on Paul (NPP). I confess that I don’t fully understand it, but I want to. I’m eagerly anticipating John Piper’s book, The Future of Justification. In this book Piper reacts against a popular NPP proponent, N. T. Wright (see an interview with Piper about this book). But before I read Piper’s book, I want to understand a little bit of N. T. Wright. What, in brief, is N. T. Wright’s understanding of the New Perspective on Paul?

An Emerging Practical Ecclesiology: Worship

A final aspect of the Emerging Church Movement’s (ECM) practical ecclesiology is worship. What is ECM’s proposal for worship in the postmodern era?
